Following a busy school year, summer gives us a great opportunity to display the shuttle in parades, air shows, and festivals. Several businesses have also contracted the shuttle to be on hand for activities, including open houses and grand openings.
The Dream Flight USA shuttle welcomed hundreds of visitors on Sunday, July 13th. The shuttle was open for tours in Owen, WI following the Owen Jr. Fair Parade. Once again, those touring the shuttle were amazed at not only the size of the interior, but the number and variety of work stations available to the students.
To enhance the on board work stations, the climate controlled shuttle is equipped with two video monitors, DVD and VHS units, and a sound system.
There are several work stations on board the shuttle, from an area where a group of students design a floor plan for the International Space Station, to a remote controlled arm that allows students to deploy a “satellite”. Well, sort of. Imagination is part of the success of the Dream Flight USA shuttle program.
Up to 20- 4th, 5th, or 6th graders at one time will spend from 90 minutes to 2 hours on board the shuttle, rotating through the various work stations. One of the favorite activities is the study of the solar system. After viewing a short video, the students can use a scale model of the solar system to learn more about the planets, the places they may be traveling to when they are adults.
Many of the work station activities can be carried on back in the classroom. As an example, one of the activities associated with the solar system work station is having the students design an alien to live on a particular planet. You will be amazed at the creativity displayed by students. All they need is the opportunity!
